At one time, a touching adventure Rime We appreciated quite high – look for a review of this link. And recently, we managed to talk with Remya Shinchill, the main producer of the game, who told in detail about the new version for Switch. Studio Tequila Works Now he is actively engaged in the adaptation of the project for the Nintendo console to release the game in November.

The same Rime, but on Nintendo
– Please tell us about creating Rime. How the development of the project proceeded, and how it reached the exit on all current platforms?
Remi Chinchilla : Rime history began a couple of years ago thanks to the idea of one of the developers of Tequila Works. At first they planned to make the game exclusive for PS4, but later decided to release on other platforms, including Nintendo Switch. You know, when it was only announced, we were already engaged in the development of versions of the game for consoles and PC, but, reaching the final processes, we decided to start porting Rime on Nintendo Switch.
-You can share some funny and unusual story that happened during the development of the project?
Remi Chinchilla: Yes, and this is just due to the release of Nintendo Switch. You see, at that time we quickly developed the game for the current generation of consoles and PC, and then the announcement of Nintendo suddenly thundered. And we are all the following: “Ha! What is it?!"(Laughs). In addition, the period of time between the announcement and output of the console was very short, and we spent it on preparing the game for other current platforms.
Our team always knew that when Nintendo has a new console, this is every time something unique. And we quickly realized that we want to know what it is, we want to see and hold it in our hands. Actually, after the presentation of the new prefix, we realized: yeah, now we need to make a version for Nintendo Switch.
– How is the version for Switch different from the version for PS4, say? What changes have comprehended Rime in a new format?
Remi Chinchilla: We thought how to use the advantages of the new console from Nintendo, but at the same time to convey the same experience in the game that the owners of the rest of the platforms received. So we concentrated on those features of Switch that would make the process of Rime more … tangible, so to speak. Among them were the touchscreen and the menu, we decided to use them. At the same time, we discarded the idea of putting Joy-Con controllers into business and all that is so much: it was not very knitting with the idea of transferring the same experience from the game on all consoles. Thus, we got almost the same game, only on Nintendo Switch – with a touchscreen and the opportunity to take it with us wherever.
But we did not integrate Joy-Con, that’s all the matter. Although this is a cool Nintendo Switch chip, the use of its potential could lead to radical changes in gameplay. And since we did not want to change Rime much, we decided not to focus on Joy-Con controllers.
Poruting as art
– It turns out that this version of the game is very similar to the version for PS4?
Remi Chinchilla: Exactly. We began to portable RIME on Nintendo Switch just after working on the version for PS4. In those days, we already had all the assets in our hands, so our team was focused on optimizing the project and observing how the game feels on Switch.
At first, the only developer was engaged in this, and we spent a lot of time. Poruting the game to another console is not a task for one person. Demobld, software, and a lot of little things are important here. So we killed a lot of time to adapt the project for the console from Nintendo.
The company with which we were engaged in the RIME port, Tantalus Media (You can know them by adaptation The Legend of Zelda for Wii U, for example), I already had extensive experience working with iron from Nintendo. Cooperating with them, we at Tequila Works began to study how to adapt the graphic component of the game. The whole thing was precisely in visualization! Even when we have already solved most of the problems that arose during the work on porting, the main task remained: the game should look and play on Nintendo Switch as good as on all other relevant platforms.
– What players do you want to attract by releasing Rime on Nintendo Switch a few months after the release on other consoles and PC?
Remi Chinchilla: I think that everyone at once (laughs). Because those of the players who have already passed Rime will certainly want to try out the game in a new format. Especially its portable mode.
– Is it planned to release the game for iOS and Android?
Remi Chinchilla: Let's go around this topic. So far, we have no plans for mobile systems (laughs).
Children-testers
-Maybe you want to say something else about Nintendo Switch?
Remi Chinchilla: Perhaps. When we began to work tightly with Nintendo, the company has provided us with great support. We just really needed staff to test the game at the early stage of porting. And Nintendo agreed to provide us with people for this task, asking how much a person is required by our team. “Okay,” they said, “how much do you need? Here are children ". And it was just wonderful! Usually, when the console only goes on sale, you do not hope for help from the company in such a short time, but we received it, which was incredibly happy.
-That is, the children in a sense helped to make the game better?
Remi Chinchilla: You know, children really help very well with testing the game at the early stage of its development. Because while you have no idea how the game works, you cannot understand whether you are moving in the right direction. So the team of children who are ready to check new builds undoubtedly facilitates the task.
Nintendo on Igomir-2017
C Rime for Switch we met at the stand Nintendo – This year he turned out to be one of the largest at the exhibition. The Japanese not only brought their version to Russia FIFA 18 And the sensational Super Mario Odyssey , but they also arranged a funny room to demonstrate the console Snes mini. The interior was designed in the style of a typical Russian apartment from the nineties: with flower wallpaper, carpet sofas and “kinescopal” TV.
We, by the way, already managed to test the retro-console itself-and were not disappointed.
– And finally: does Rime have the opportunity to get a sequel?
Remi Chinchilla: Sequel? Why not. But Rime is a whole and finished story. It would be difficult to come up with the development of the events that it ended.
We are trying to make interesting and dissimilar projects in Tequila Works. Take, for example, Deadlight – There is a huge difference between her and Rime. So our studio is in the constant search for new IP, and we do not want to emphasize too much attention on the same universe. It is always much more fascinating to find something new and original and try yourself in something excellent from what I had previously done.
The RIME version for Nintendo Switch will go on sale on November 17.
